At Lake Wallenpaupack, Old Man Winter Is Being Cranky

Note: This is a reprint of a post originally published by Karen Rice, REALTOR on the Pike Wayne County PA Real Estate blog.

Wallenpaupack IciclesWintering at Wallenpaupack!

Brrrrr! The air coming off Lake Wallenpaupack the other day felt as if it were coming directly from Antarctica! Even with no breeze to speak of, it was mighty cold! When I reluctantly crawled out of my warm nest of fleece and multiple quilts, the temperature outside was 3.4 degrees. The nip in the air INSIDE of my house hurt my nose!

I should not complain, for with the exception of our crazy October blizzard, we have had a pretty mild season so far.  The children and I have also been longing for some more snow (the Mr. of the house, however, has enjoyed the lack of white fluff.) This is a great disappointment to the snow bunnies as well; but the good news for them is that Ski Big Bear at Masthope is in operation! (Update: Since I drafted this post, we got about 5 - 6 inches of powdery snow to make everything look perty!)

While real estate showings during the winter may not be as numerous as in the warmer months, I do still show (and sell) homes all winter long.  Here are some things to keep in mind when searching for homes in Northeast PA while in the grip of Old Man Winter.

  • DRESS WARMLY!  This may seem like a "duh" or a statement from Captain Obvious, but it is NO JOKE that our air here can be quite a bit colder than it is where the buyers are from!  Be sure to bring a hat, a scarf, and warm gloves.  Many of the homes we see will be "winterized" and therefore will NOT have the heat on and, on a side note... the bathrooms will be inoperable.

  • WEAR WINTER FOOTWEAR!  Right now we do not have much snow and no ice to speak of.  That is NOT the norm.  Please wear water resistant boots with GOOD TRACTION.  Some of the homes we visit may not have plowed driveways or walkways.  I usually have a shovel with me and some rock salt, but remember - even though the Poconos ain't exactly the Rockies (well, not even close), you are still coming to "the mountains."  Landscaping is "natural" and "rough."  :)

  • PACK A LUNCH!  Depending on where we are, there may not be a convenient spot to grab a bite to eat. I usually bring my own lunch with me and nibble while driving in between houses.  (Besides, McDonald's is really bad for you!)  That said, I can get you a 10% discount for a delicious sit-down meal at Ehrhardt's Waterfront Restaurant on Lake Wallenpaupack!

  • BEWARE OF TOO MANY BEVERAGES! Remember my side note above - many of the homes are winterized and will not have operable bathrooms. Additionally, we may not be near a public restroom.
That said, it might be a good idea to bring a thermos of hot coffee to warm you up between homes.

  • FILL YOUR TANK.   Depending on the properties chosen, we may cover 200 miles or so in a day!  While this isn't a barren wasteland by any stretch of the imagination, certain areas do not have service stations right around the corner.  So make sure you have a full tank before we start out...we may be 15-20 minutes or so away from the nearest gas station!
I'm ready to brave the elements if you are! If you've been thinking about buying a Northeast PA vacation home in Cobbs Lake Preserve, Wallenpaupack Lake Estates, The Hideout, Masthope, Fawn Lake Forest,  Hemlock Farms, Tanglwood Lakes, or even a Wallenpaupack Lakefront home, I am your girl!

Call me, Karen Rice, REALTOR,  directly at 570-647-5170 and let's get started.  If we look NOW, chances are good you will have your new vacation home by Memorial Day!

When it comes to this Masthope luxury home, FANTASTIC is an UNDERSTATEMENT.

An opportunity like this does not come along every day.  Masthope is known for beautiful custom built homes, but this contemporary masterpiece goes above and beyond.

Truly a one-of-a-kind home with custom touches and additions, there is not another like it in Masthope; this is the only one G Anderson Homes built. This award-winning builder has been long recognized as the leader in Masthope new construction.  One look inside this showcase home and you'll see why.

Once inside you will find an inviting open floor plan with bright, light-filled spaces and accented by warm hardwoods and classic granite counter tops in the generous kitchen.  The unique prow-front adds character and charm to the living room (and the family room downstairs).

Classic elements such as the floor to ceiling wall of windows and the cozy living room fireplace, the sun-filled dining room with easy access to two decks, and bathrooms on every level work together to create a stunning home fit for royalty.  The elegant, tasteful furnishings are included if you wish!

Combine all of this with the perfect 4-season community of Masthope and you have a clear winner.  Ski, ride horseback, swim, fish, go boating...all from within the Masthope Mountain oasis.  (Learn more about Masthope in the Neighborhood Information tab. )

Are You Ready For Your National Internet ID Card???

National Internet ID Cards?  Hmmm.  1984: We are living it little by little each day.  Let's hope this is "just" an urban legend, but it seems eerily plausible if you ask me.  I'd love for Katerina to be wrong on this....but I fear that she is not.

Anyone who has not actually read Orwell's prophetic book Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984) should seriously purchase a copy from Amazon.com and read it.  Now.

Via Nestor & Katerina Gasset Realtors® Wellington Florida Luxury Homes (International Properties and Investments, Inc.):

Are You Ready For Your National Internet ID Card?  Yes, I know it is voluntary... for now....

national id card issue

So now we are so ‘stupid’ that we can not longer be trusted to create our own passwords to the internet, our own passwords to log on to our bank accounts and to manage our own passwords to our websites and blogs.

They think they know better than we do in how to protect our private information.

Hmmm, how’s the Wikileaks thing working out for you? I see, the government is REALLY good at protecting their secrets!

And yet, the administration is pushing for National Internet IDs!  Do you know which other country has a National Internet ID?

The government has been trying to regulate the internet, the last free place on earth where free and even some non free people have a voice. It is the last frontier of free markets, free enterprise and free speech. It is the last place on earth where you can start a company and make millions of dollars in just a few years.

Of course, the government has been trying to figure out a way to tax the internet, control the internet, monitor the discourse on the internet and be able to shut down the internet under the guise of security. Remember what Benjamin Franklin said years ago: "Those who trade liberty for security deserve neither." Those words are so true.

And we the people must fight this at every turn. Remember, don’t forget, how they do things to make it so you don’t protest against it. They do it by:

  • Slowly weaseling their way into it,
  • Creating “voluntary” programs ( that always turn into mandatory at some point)
  • Installing regulations that are too hard to meet for those who choose not the “voluntary” way,
  • Creating the illusion that this is best for all the people
  • Creating the false sense of security, feeding into your fears.

This kind of manipulation is evil and cruel especially when they capitalize on your fears.

What better way to establish Internet Tax than through National ID cards.

After all, how are they planning on paying for the National ID cards?

Remember when they promised ( most of you are too young to remember) that the creation of the social security card would NEVER lead to using it for Identification?

Think about it.

How much do you trust the government with your personal information, your private information and your passwords to all your bank accounts, etc?

I would rather have control over my own passwords to anything and everything I do online. If I lose my password I only have myself to blame. If someone hacks into one of my accounts, then I deal with it and move on.

The National Internet ID would give you one password and one username to use all across all your online dealings. So that means you would have the same password to get into your Facebook account as you do to get into your bank account.

Now, that sounds like a super recipe for Identify Theft!!!

Not only that, the government would see every website you visit, every online purchase you make and every comment your write. There would be no anonymity.

Write to your congress representatives to tell them to have government stay out of the Internet and stay out of managing every detail of our lives. Tell your leaders to grow a spine!

A bill like this has been tried and failed. That is why they are doing an in and around Congress to get this done.

Call your congressmen and congresswomen today to tell them to take a stand for our constitutional right to make sure that the laws that are created are created in Congress and not by government bureaucrats, committees and regulatory agencies who bypass the constitution.

Kodak ESP Office 6150 Wireless Printerp

FINAL UPDATE: This printer is going in the trash.  In spite of Mark and John trying valiantly to help me (I can only say GOOD things about Kodak's customer service!!)  this printer still does not work. I do not have time to call the help desk all the time to make the thing print.  Every time I NEED it, it won't print.  It will not work with WIFI nor with the cable.  I don't use a printer ALL that much because I have the office printer at work that I use most of the time. I only need occasional use, not heavy duty mega printing, but when I NEED it, I REALLY NEED it.

I'm done.  I thank Kodak for relieving some of the money I put out for this piece of junk by sending me more ink and paper...but sorry.  Kodak needs to stay in the camera business, I think.  I'm not being mean, I am just trying to help others to not make the same mistake I did.

---------------------------------------------

UPDATE 2/2/11:  Before reading the rest of my scathing and unpleasant review of this printer, I will say that I was contacted faithfully by Mark and by another gentleman named John from Kodak. I had issues (my own schedule) getting in touch with them in return but we finally connected today.  Kodak issued a very recent firmware update (in the past few days - since my initial complaint) and even after installing that, I still had issues.  John was able to walk me through the process to get the computer to recognize the printer as a wireless device again (it involved opening the printer's software and "adding" the printer again even though it was installed.)

The wireless function now seems to be working.  I will update again in a week or two.  For right now I have been mollified and the printer seems to be working.  We will see what else happens.  Thank you Mark and John for your commitment to solving my problem.  If after a while the printer is still functioning I will remove this blog and put a more favorable one up in its place.

----------------------------------------------------------

I can't say I wasn't warned. Some of my Facebook friends said they hated their Kodak printer, but I, the cynical Kodak Printer ESP Office 6150one, actually fell for the clever marketing campaign put out by Kodak and bought it - bought the pitch hook line and sinker, and bought the printer.

The wireless does NOT work - well it does.  But it takes a week for it to decide that it prints.  No joke. When I first hooked it up (YES my software is up to date, I just bought the darn thing and updated the software immediately) it worked fine....that day.  Because it was Christmas time and we had a plethora of boxes and crap all over, my husband destroyed the box after we were satisfied that it worked. (BIG MISTAKE!)  Then about three or four days later my daughter and I were tyring to print wirelessly and it wouldn't print.  "The printer is not responding."

So I had to hook it up to the USB - WHICH IS NOT WHAT I WANTED - I PAID FOR A WIRELESS PRINTER!

The printer itself says it is connected to WiFi.  When we try to print from our computers, we get "The printer is not responding." Check your connection and try again. Blah, blah, blah.  The Kodak website is as helpful as Microsoft help...which is WORTHLESS. So we give up and print with the USB cable. I am not happy.

Then, miraculously, ONE WEEK LATER, it spontaneously started printing all the documents my daughter had needed A WEEK AGO (and we already printed them out so now we had DOUBLE.)  OK, fine, I figured it got over its hiccup. Yay!

Today I need flyers for my open house in two hours. Guess what?  IT WON'T PRINT WIRELESSLY.  I need to go hook my computer up to the printer, again, so that I can print them.  Oh, guess what? Now it's out of ink.  It gave me a "warning" about 5 prints before it quit.

I hate this printer, I hate that I spent $130 of my HARD EARNED MONEY ON IT and now I can't even send it back as I don't have the boxes any more (when it initially worked I foolishly assumed it would always work.)

This review is going on Amazon.com to hopefully prevent others from making the same mistake I did.  What a waste of my money.  I'm using Windows 7, and everything else works fine with my WiFi.  Everything but this stupid printer, and from what I have seen, I am not the only person with this problem.

Now I have to hook up all the computers manually whenever we want to print.  Nice.  I COULD HAVE KEPT MY OLD PRINTER AND DONE THAT!  Plus I ran out of ink after only 200 prints or so.  Is that normal???!!!  Sure the ink is cheaper but it RUNS OUT FAST.

RUN from this machine!

From Northeast PA: Happy New Year, Blessings to You!

Wishing all of my friends and readers a happy new year from Northeast PA!

Many people start out the new year with a backwards negative comment, like: “Here’s hoping the new year is better than the last.”  Well, probably it won’t be, if you have a perpetual negative outlook.  I have always been a “half full” person.  I look forward to each new year with a feeling of thankfulness for the blessings of the previous year.

I’m looking forward to great things in 2011.  That said, 2010 was not a bad year.  Not at all!Karen Rice Market Sales Pike Wayne 2010

I closed out the year ranking #15 in the entire Pike Wayne MLS for closed transactions – my final sales on the MLS are $4,349,282, not including another $528,500 in sales that are not registered on the MLS.

My final numbers work out to be $4,877,782.  I was shocked beyond belief when I tallied up my numbers  – while so many others were whining about the “bad market,” I just kept working. I refuse to feed into negativity.

Were there bad experiences in 2010?  Of course.  There were offers to purchase that fell apart, clients who were disappointed, appraisals that caused angst, and some other behind the scenes issues that caused some feelings of stress.  I remember one agent on the other side of a deal I was working on commented “Wow, how long have you been in this business? Because you are being remarkably calm about this.”

I said “It’s just another bump, and flipping out on the phone is not going to help the matter is it?  It is what it is, we can only do what we can do and go from there.  When things are out of our control, getting upset is not going to help anything and will just make things worse.”  My mentor and boss, Judy Rodonski (I love that woman!) has instilled in me time and time again “Your job is to keep everyone calm and keep everything on an even keel.”

I had some challenging home and land sales in 2010.  I sold homes in Masthope, The Hideout, Paupackan Lake Estates, and even two lakefront properties on Lake Wallenpaupack.  Every single transaction had its own ups and downs.  I am thankful for the business I had in 2010 and look forward to making more “vacation home dreams” come true in 2011.

God Bless & Have a WONDERFUL 2011 – I know I will!
